Troubleshooting Data Connection & File Path Errors

When opening professional data tools like Tableau (.twb) or Power BI (.pbix), you may occasionally encounter an "Unable to connect" or "File not found" error. This typically happens because these files function as "maps"—they don't always contain the raw data themselves. Instead, they store a specific File Path (an address) to where the data is hosted. If that address doesn't match, the connection breaks.

How to Fix the Connection

To restore the dashboard and/or open the file, you simply need to "re-point" the software to the current location of the data on your machine.

For Tableau Users

  • The Error Prompt: In the "Unable to complete action" dialog, click Edit Connection.

  • Manual Fix: If the prompt is closed, go to the Data Source tab at the bottom left. Right-click your data source and select Edit Connection.

  • The Solution: Navigate to the folder where the data file (CSV or Excel) is saved on your computer, select it, and click Open.

For Power BI Users

  • The Error Prompt: You will often see a yellow bar at the top stating "There are pending changes."

  • Manual Fix: Go to the Home ribbon, click the dropdown under Transform Data, and select Data Source Settings.

  • The Solution: Select the broken file path, click Change Source, and then Browse to locate the file on your local drive. Click Close & Apply.
